OUR COMMON DAMP PROOFING QUESTIONS
Damp Proofing is when you insert a barrier in the walls of your home. This can be done in different ways. We inject the DPC into the mortar, creating the barrier to stop the moisture from entering your home. We also use insulated plaster boards to reinforce the barrier and prevent further damp affecting your home.
Yes! But we are bound to say yes, but hear us out! If your home does not have sufficient damp proofing, you are at risk of moisture affecting your home in a significant way. Rising damp is a common issue and occurs when water rises through porous materials like bricks and mortar and enters the walls or floors of your homes. Causes of rising damp include, inadequate or faulty DPC, bridging of the DPC, if the external ground level is higher than the DPC water can bypass the barrier and enter your home, leaking pipes or faulty plumbing systems and finally excessive condensation due to poor ventilation, inadequate insulation or high levels of humidity can also cause rising damp.
Penetrative Damp is where moisture penetrates through the external walls of a building into the internal spaces. Causes of penetrative damp include cracks and gaps in external walls, defective or missing pointing, leaking gutters and down pipes and faulty or inadequate waterproofing.
Damp can cause massive issues throughout your property. Prolonged exposure to damp can weaken the structural integrity of your property leading to cracks, crumbling plaster and damage to timber. Not only can damp affect the structure of your property but also the interior, rising damp can cause paint to peel, wallpaper to bubble, plaster to deteriorate. More importantly, and one we take very seriously at MJS Damp Specialist Ltd is your health and well-being. Being exposed to damp conditions could trigger respiratory difficulties, increased allergies and other health issues.
A lot of damp problems start from outside of your property, such as issues with pointing, down pipes, poor rendering or damaged gutters. However, damp proofing cannot be completed from the outside. To damp proof effectively and irradicate either rising damp or penetrative damp, you have to expose the brick work to allow the moisture out of the wall and to air out and then we are able to rectify and solve the damp problems depending on what is required. We can also replace or repair the root of the damp too such as re-pointing or re-rendering the affected areas or replacing gutters. We have you covered!
This is one we get asked a lot! As part of the damp proofing process, we usually “hack off” existing plaster back to brick. This can be dusty and a little bit messy! But please be assured, we make sure we cover any of your belongings that haven’t been moved and ensure the areas are left clean and tidy ready for the next phase of the process.
We ask customers to remove all furniture, where possible, from the areas we are working on. If you are unable to move furniture out of the room or area, we ask you to move them to a central position and to ensure they are covered. We also bring our own protective covers. Fixtures, such as, photos, pictures, lamp shades etc all need to be removed prior to the work starting.
In preparation for your damp proof work, we ask you to remove as much furniture as possible. We do ask our customers to cover up any furniture that is left in the room. We also use our own cover sheets as well however as they are used daily, they can become dusty so just like our customers to have that extra protection.
No, you cannot complete any damp work without removing the plaster. To be able to carry out damp proofing, once moisture is in your wall or walls, they need to be taken back to brick to allow the moisture to air out so that we can then complete the work required to solve your damp problems.
